Only Hitchcock could use four moments of stillness to kick-start an action sequence. Having watched helplessly as an unwitting motorist is engulfed by fire, Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) is frozen in close-up by the horror of an unstoppable river of flame as it meanders towards a petrol pump to precipitate the inevitable explosion.

Ardent film fans rarely limit their love for movies to just watching their particular favourites on the big screen. Action figures, tie in novelisations, games, extras loaded special edition DVD's, posters and tee shirts are just a sample of off screen merchandising that exists to further cement a films place in the hearts of it's fans. Some films, genres and characters however create levels of devotion that go above and beyond the call of duty.

Brilliant Failures: The Prowler (AKA Rosemary’s Killer) (Dir. Joseph Zito, 1981)

I imagine few of those who made The Prowler, and few of those who have seen it, regard it as either brilliant or a failure - and yet it warrants inclusion in this series as much as any movie we have featured. The Prowler (which is available on Region 2 DVD under its alternate title, Rosemary's Killer) is, for most of its running time, a shocking and grizzly slasher film that delivers precisely what those who choose to watch it expect to see.
