Film Review: Cold Souls (Sophie Barthes, 2009)

UK theatrical release date: 6 November 2009 / Starring: Paul Giamatti, David Strathairn, Dana Corzun, Emily Watson
In Cold Souls, Paul Giamatti finds himself in the unique position of playing Paul Giamatti, albeit a depressed, conflicted and anxiety-ridden version of himself. He has taken a starring role in a production of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, but finds it impossible to control his neuroses and deliver the required performance. To ease his suffering, his agent suggests he visits a local soul extraction agency run by eccentric scientist Dr. Flintstein (David Straithairn). Sure enough, Paul's soul is diagnosed as 'twisted' and swiftly removed, and with it go all his dark thoughts and distress. Unfortunately, he also finds himself without a moral compass - reduced to an empty, emotionless shell. Soon he risks losing not just his job, but also his wife, Claire (Emily Watson).

Screengem: Michael Myers’ Mask in Halloween (1978)
A definitive feature of the definitive slasher film, the Michael Myers mask is an unlikely masterpiece of movie design. It was, in a favourite titbit of horror fan trivia, adapted by production designer Tommy Lee Wallace from a store-bought Halloween mask of William Shatner. Mercifully, the mask looked little like Captain Kirk when Wallace acquired it and even less like James T. when he'd finished working on it.

Film Review: 1 Day (Penny Woolcock, 2009)

Release Date: 6th November, 2009 / Starring: Dylan Duffus, Yohance Watson, Chris Wilson
Jacqui Smith MP was criticised this year for branding UK streets safe, yet only venturing out for a kebab when escorted by a broad-shouldered bodyguard. If the former Home Secretary wishes to overturn her critics' suggestions that she's out of touch, all she has to do is watch 1 Day, the first British hip-hop musical. Written and directed by Penny Woolcock, the film was shot entirely on location in Birmingham, and offers a stark and unpleasant glimpse into the lives of self-proclaimed hustlers.
